All of the plump; none of the pain. That’s what most of us are looking for in the quest for big, beestung lips.

If you're looking to recreate that look with makeup, we have a couple of tricks up our sleeve to help you get there.

Scrub off any dead skin to make sure your canvas is prepped and smooth. You can make a simple sugar scrub at home using sugar and some oil — the rough, grainy sugar will take off any flakes and dry patches. You can also buy a lip scrub. Lush make a great lip scrub, but we don’t love that it’s in a pot as it makes it a bit tricky to apply. Instead, we like this option from e.l.f.

This product may look smooth when you first get it out of the tube, but once you use it a couple of times you’ll find the brown sugar particles do an excellent job at buffing away chapped lips. Simply apply, rub your lips together and blot off with a tissue.

Grab a nice, dense lip balm and make sure your lips are hydrated, happy and ready to have product applied to them. You can use a simple Vaseline if you like, just as long as it’s clear and you don’t overdo it — you don’t want your lips to look greasy. Wait for the lipbalm to absorb before you move onto the next step.

This pricey lip balm doesn’t come cheap, but we love how it makes your lips look even on its own. It has a pink tint, a slight sheen and a delicious flavour that’s not quite berry; it smells more like a flowery bubblegum.

Good for chapped lips, cracked heels and desert-dry cuticles, this pure lanolin lip balm is perfect for soothing dehydrated lips and acting as a base for lip products. It’s designed for breastfeeding mothers, so you know the natural ingredients will be kind to your skin.

Lip plumpers aren’t for everyone, as they can burn and sting when they’re first applied and make your lips feel dry and sore over time. They work by causing irritation to the lips, causing blood to rush to that area to temporarily make the lips swell up. That means they’re not effective in the long-term; but they can make your lips look bigger in the moment.

To use a lip plumper before applying other products, apply a thin layer, wait around ten minutes and then wipe off before going in with a lip balm. You can also leave the plumper on if you want to. You’ll probably have to keep re-applying your lip plumper every hour or so if you want to keep your pout looking big and juicy throughout the day.

When it comes to lip plumpers, Too Faced’s Lip Injection is the market leader. The original version is more mild, while the ‘Extreme’ and ‘Maximum Plump’ boast a stronger, slightly more eye-watering formula that’ll really get your lips looking Angelina Jolie-esque.

Slightly less tingly but still highly effective, this Revolution lip gloss is easy on the wallet and comes in a gorgeous range of shades. Glaze is perfect for a crystal-clear sheen, while the Kiss colourway is a lovely, your-lips-but-better pink.

It’s pretty easy to make your own lip plumper at home. Just be sure you don’t overdo it, as you could easily end up burning yours lips' sensitive skin. Here’s how to DIY a lip plumper to make your lips look bigger.

We consider ourselves something of connoisseurs when it comes to long-wearing, super-natural nude lip liners. Lip liner is one of the most critical steps when it comes to mastering the art of faking plumped-up lips, so choose wisely.

This is one of our favourite nude lip pencils on the market because it really does mimic a wide range of lip shades perfectly. If you’re fair to medium skinned and you want something darker to define your lips, this might not be for you, as it’ll be too light. But if you want something that looks virtually undetectable on the lips, choose this rosy, warm-undertoned shade from MAC.

When it comes to formula, this nude lipliner by Pat McGrath takes the cake every time. Impossibly creamy yet incredibly long-wearing, the PermaGel lip pencils have a magical, lightweight feeling on the lips, and the shade range is phenomenal, too. Contour is perfect for darker skin tones or anyone looking to really create some shadow around their natural lip line.

Budget-friendly yet surprisingly high-performing, this nude lip liner from Natural Collection is the perfect tool for creating juicy big lips — the shade Espresso is our favourite, but there are some other good options to choose from as well. The waxy texture helps this pencil adhere to the lips.

Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Lip Cheat collection is arguably the Holy Grail when it comes to making your lips look bigger with makeup. The original dusky pink hue is the brand’s bestseller, but the recently released deeper shades are ideal for darker skin tones. Take a look at Pillow Talk Medium and Pillow Talk Intense.

Another slightly more pink-tinted hue is Peekaboo Neutral, from NYX’s line of lip pencils. Cheap, comfortable and easy to apply, this product is a worthy addition to your makeup bag. If you prefer something a bit deeper, look to the shade Natural, from the same line. It has a brown pull to it that makes it excellent for sculpting the lips.

This is the ultimate makeup hack for faking big lips — overlining can make your lips look far bigger than they really are.

Overlining just means using a lip pencil to draw slightly around where your natural lip line is. You shouldn’t overline more than the width of the nib of your pencil. If you do it well, the line that you’ve drawn will appear to be your actual lipline, so your lips will look bigger.

Here are four of our favourite tips for making your lips look bigger with makeup:

Why do matte shades make your lips look bigger? Well, the flat, single shade that matte lipsticks create can play a trick on the eye, making it hard to see where the lips are thinner around the edges. A matte lipstick paired with a darker lip liner is the ultimate way to fake big lips.

Similarly though, a super glossy finish can also make your lips look larger, particularly if you apply it generously and take the product slightly outside your natural lip line. The light will catch the gloss beautifully, making your pout look plumped-up and juicy.

One of the original lipsticks for faking big lips, this nude-meets-pink tone and powdery matte wears well throughout the day and will suit a range of fair to medium skin tones.

The richly pigmented nude tone of the shade 'Interview’ is the ultimate your-lips-but-better hue. We love the impressive staying power in this range of lipsticks — all of them promise to hold through every activity, from cocktails to kissing.

On the glossy side, this Maybelline lipgloss has a flattering, translucent pinky hue that'll look good on most skin tones without interfering with whatever lipliner you've already laid down. A little, lip-plumping tingle seals the deal for us.

It's no secret that this Kiko lipgloss is one of our favourite formulas on the market. Easily comparable to a more high-end texture, this gloss is non-sticky, mirror-shiny and comes in a lovely range of shades. Our favourite is Natural Rosewood.
